and browlift cosmetic surgery, please select one of the links

What is a facelift?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed
to rejuvenate the face by removing excess fat and skin and by
tightening of underlying soft tissue and muscle of the face and neck.

How long does a facelift last?
A facelift doesn't stop the aging process but merely "turns the
clock back." How far the clock is turned back and the rate at
which facial aging occurs is greatly dependent upon a person's
age and lifestyle. Years later most patients look better than
if they had never undergone surgery. Many patients never have
a second facelift while others have additional surgery at a later
time.

Can a facelift be done without scars?
Unfortunately no. All surgery leaves scars although plastic surgeons
are trained to close incisions in a way as to make the scars as
inconspicuous as possible. Some scars eventually become a faintly
visible fine line. The scarring from a facelift is usually quite
acceptable to most patients.

How long will I be out of work following
a facelift?
Most patients are able to return to work in about 10 days
or so. You should allow more time prior to major social engagements.
The recovery period from "minilifts" is slightly shorter.

What is a mini-facelift?
Dr. O'Connell believes that all plastic surgical procedures should be individualized
for each patient. Younger patients usually do not need as extensive
a correction and can sometimes be treated with a more limited
procedure with shorter scars and a quicker recovery time. (see section on the short-scar facelift.) In 1999 Dr. O'Connell published his traditional technique for rejuvenation of the face and neck in younger patients as the "baby-bommer facelift."

Are other procedures done upon the face at
the same time?
Dr. O'Connell often performs other procedures such as eyelid
surgery, neck liposuction, lip augmentation, brow
lifts and limited laser skin resurfacing at the time of a facelift
depending upon the patient's goals and the manifestations of facial
aging that are present.

How can I hide things until I return
to normal?
Dr. O'Connell will discuss camouflage techniques that both men
and women can use to disguise the temporary bruising and swelling
that occurs following all facelifts.

What type of anesthesia is used?
While facelifts can be performed under either general or local
anesthesia Dr. O'Connell prefers to use local anesthesia (with
monitored anesthesia care with intravenous sedation) whenever
possible. Some people refer to this as "twilight" anesthesia.

Where is a facelift performed?
Dr. O'Connell performs most facelifts in accredited and state licensed office surgical
facility under local anesthesia with monitored intravenous sedation.
Occasionally for medical reasons or personal preference a facelift
is performed at a local hospital and almost all patients go home
that day. Skilled nursing care is available to assist you at home
following your facelift or other aesthetic procedure.

Are there risks involved with facial
rejuvenation surgery?
As with any surgical procedure there are risks and potential
complications. In the hands of a board certified plastic surgeon, major
complications are infrequent after facelifts and most patients
are satisfied with their result. A careful consideration of the
risks, alternatives and potential benefits of any surgical procedure is an important part
of the pre-operative consultative process.
