Nose plastic surgery - rhinoplasty

What will my nose look like after surgery?

In general, a rhinoplasty (nose job) is designed to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose. In most cases excess cartilage and bone is removed to provide a smaller, straighter, more aesthetic appearance. Occasionally tissue is added to the nose. Dr. O'Connell believes that each nose must be viewed in relation to the entire facial structure and that overly "done" turned up noses are to be avoided. Our goal in rhinoplasty is to provide a more balanced, refined, natural look without compromising function.

If I have trouble breathing through my nose or have had a broken nose will my insurance policy pay for rhinoplasty?

Difficulty breathing through the nose is often associated with a deviated septum or other problem with the internal anatomy of the nose. This can sometimes be associated with prior trauma such as a broken nose.

Difficulty breathing and sinus problems can also be caused by other conditions as well, and a careful diagnostic examination is needed before surgery. While individual insurance policies can vary, functional surgery to improve breathing is covered by many insurance plans.

The cost of simultaneous correction of cosmetic deformities of the nose is usually not covered by insurance.

Do I need to wear a splint after surgery?

In most cases a splint is worn for about four days following rhinoplasty.

Is there a lot of bruising afterwards?

This depends on the extent of the procedure but most patients experience seven to ten days of bruising following rhinoplasty. The nose itself will be swollen for about two weeks or longer but resolution of subtle swelling at the tip of the nose can take many months after surgery to resolve.

Where are the incisions placed?

In most rhinoplasties the incisions are hidden within the inside of the nose. Occasionally external incisions are placed in or near the creases where the nose meets the cheek to change the shape of the nostrils.

In the "open" technique, which is primarily utilized to improve more difficult problems in the tip and central one-third of the nose, an external incision is placed across the columella.

Are the changes permanent?

In general, the final shape resulting from a rhinoplasty is expected to last a lifetime and regrowth of bumps and deformities corrected by the procedure is rare.

Our noses do undergo changes in shape with age, however.

Is computer imaging used?

Dr. O'Connell uses computer imaging prior to rhinoplasty solely as an educational tool to aid in understanding the potential effects of surgery upon the nose and to illustrate the internal anatomy of the nose. It's important to understand that computer imaging may not accurately depict the appearance following surgery and it's use does not imply any guarantee.

Are there risks associated with rhinoplasty?

As with all surgery there are risks and potential complications. Most patients are satisfied with the results of their rhinoplasty and the surgery is ordinarily very safe. A careful consideration of all risks, alternatives and potential benefits is an important part of the consultative process prior to any surgical procedure.
