To get answers to the most frequent questions about abdominoplasty,
commonly known as "tummy tuck" plastic surgery, please

What techniques are available for abdominal
body contouring?
The two most popular techniques in use for this purpose are liposuction
and the procedures known as abdominoplasty.

What is an abdominoplasty?
An abdominoplasty is what is commonly referred to as a "tummy
tuck." Abdominoplasties are used to tighten the skin and/or
muscles of the abdominal wall that have been stretched by pregnancy, the aging process and/or by weight fluctuations. In a traditional complete abdominoplasty,
most or all of the skin below the level of the umbilicus (belly-button)
is removed and the underlying muscles are tightened. The remaining
skin is brought downward to create the new abdominal wall. The
position of the umbilicus is not significantly changed, rather
it is brought out through a new opening in the skin.

How do I get rid of stretch marks?
In Dr. O'Connell's opinion an abdominoplast is the most effective
method of reducing stretch marks because they can actually be
removed if they are within the area of skin removal. Laser and
other treatments that do not actually remove the stretch mark
are less effective.

What is a mini-tuck?
Mini or modified abdominoplasties are a less extensive abdominoplasties. Less skin is removed in a vertical dimension usually with less resultant scarring i in a horizontal dimension. Patients
with smaller amounts of excess skin and muscle laxity can be candidates
for these procedures that usually involve less scarring and
sometimes do not require a scar around the umbilicus.

What is an endoscopic adbominoplasty?
This is a technique where the abdominal muscles are tightened
through very small incisions with the aid of an endoscope. Men
are usually the best candidates for this procedure although some
women can benefit as well.

Are there risks associated with abdominoplasty?
All surgery involves risk and potential complications. A thorough
discussion of all risks, alternatives and potential benefits is an important
part of the pre-operative consultative process.
